When speaking about cleansing crystals- it is generally on an energetic level, as opposed to cleaning the dirt off of them. The main function of crystals is to cleanse and transmute the energy that they absorb and without regular cleansing, they can become saturated and unable to function as effectively. Knowing when your crystals are in need of an energy clearing is heavily intuition based but you may also notice that your stones aren't as sparkly as once before. You, additionally, want to make sure that your crystals are charged at all times. Cleansing your crystals is not a chore, it is a practice that can be as purifying for your energy as it is for the crystals. I’ve learned about many different methods for crystal cleansing and in this post, I’ll list all methods that I know of and make particular mention of those that I have used personally. All methods can be used on the quartz crystals (such as Amethyst, Citrine, Clear Quartz, Ametrine, Rose Quartz, Smokey Quartz) that you probably have in your collection but there are cautions to be weary of with some stones referenced below.
The Full Moon Bath
The first method is the one that I use most regularly because it is known to be the most powerful. It is free, available to anyone and requires no expertise at all. You don’t really have to do anything, just facilitate the powers of mother moon to do her thing. Simply, collect all of your crystals up and move them outside under the big, full moon. The important part is that they are in the direct moonlight, you don’t have to think about much else and they can stay out there over night. This practice will cleanse as well as recharge your crystals.
Caution: Look at the rain forecast and ensure that you do not leave your collection somewhere that water may pool if it rains as the minerals that are sensitive to water, may be damaged.
Rituals using water are commonly practiced although, you do require some prior knowledge on your minerals to ensure that you don’t damage any of them. You want to use the most pure and natural water that is available to you. The best type of water to use is running water, such as rain, waterfalls, oceans, creeks or rivers. This can be done by holding your stones in the water. You can also submerge your crystals in still water in a glass cup or bowl. I wouldn't recommend using hot water, although I know of some healers that do.
Caution: This is where it is best to be knowledgeable on the hardness of your minerals measured most commonly in MOHs. If it is a "soft" crystal it is best to avoid this method. Quartz crystals are generally safe!
Smudging is the burning of sacred herbs for a spiritual cleansing effect. Some plants that are commonly used are Sage, Sweetgrass, Cedar, Palo Santo and Rosemary. I have specifically enjoyed including Sage and Palo Santo into my rituals in the past. Smudging can provide a great balance using all of the four elements. To incorporate all four elements use an abalone shell to rest your smudge stick on when burning to represent water. The herbs will represent earth, the smoke will represent air, and the burning will represent fire.
There is a prevalent issue with using some sacred herbs and woods to burn these days as they are being over harvested in the world at the present time. It is vitally important to seek a sustainable source unless you are growing some yourself. To combat the fine dust that would settle around my home from my smoke rituals, I have started diffusing the sustainably sourced essential oils of the sacred plants and woods to create a neutral atmosphere where my alter is set up.
This interesting method - that I haven't actually used myself - entails burying your crystals in the soil. The only thing you have to worry about is remembering where you buried them! Remember that birds, much like us, also enjoy shiny things and lots of which will take pretty stones back to their own collection if visible from above the soil.
Caution: Birdies and as with sun bathing, you have to be aware of the photosensitive crystals whose colour may fade in the sun.
It can be helpful to have some self cleansing crystals in your collection. Keeping crystals such as Selenite and Carnelian in your collection is beneficial, but the epitome of cleansing and re-charging crystals is the Herkimer diamond as it is not only self cleansing but clears and recharges the energy of the crystals surrounding it. The Herkimer diamond can also greatly amplify the power of the stones in it's presence!
The Sun Bath
This method goes hand in hand with moon bathing. I would only recommend letting your crystals see the morning like where the atmosphere blocks out the harsh sun which can lead to fading in some crystals. Sun light is an effective way to recharge your crystals. Whilst the moon can cleanse as well as recharge your stones, the sun can provide additional charge. This method is done in much the same way as moon bathing, as in you just need to have your crystals outside in direct sunlight. Preferably on a natural surface such as wood, grass or soil.
Caution: Do not let your crystals be exposed to the sun for too long otherwise some can become brittle and some may fade (take care with your Amethyst!) Keep in mind that faceted crystals especially can concentrate the sun's rays as they pass through and create great heat with the risk of starting fires around dry leaf litter.
Each method has it's pros and cons but I'm sure that at least one of my recommendations will suit you comfortably. There are a multitude of other ways to cleanse your crystals such as using visualisation and sound which we will touch on in a later post *spoiler alert* about energy frequencies.
